N1 Math Exploration: Discovering Heavy and Light Through Hands-On Play

Early mathematics begins long before children learn to solve equations or recognize numbers. For young children, mathematical learning is about discovering relationships, noticing differences, making comparisons, and understanding the world through everyday experiences. Simple concepts such as size, shape, quantity, and weight can be introduced naturally through play and exploration.


This week, the N1 children at Nurture Infant House took part in an engaging math exploration activity focused on understanding the concepts of “heavy” and “light.” Through touching, holding, observing, comparing, and sorting a variety of everyday objects, the children were given the opportunity to experience differences in weight for themselves.


Rather than simply being told which objects were heavy or light, the children became active explorers. They used their hands to feel the weight of each object, made their own judgments, and sorted the objects into trays labelled “Heavy” and “Light.”

This playful activity provided a meaningful way for children to develop early mathematical thinking while having fun.

Discovering Weight Through Hands-On Exploration


For young children, abstract concepts are easier to understand when they can experience them physically. The idea that one object can be heavier than another becomes much clearer when children can actually pick up the objects and feel the difference.


During the activity, the children were introduced to various familiar objects. They were encouraged to hold each item carefully and pay attention to how it felt in their hands.


Some objects felt heavier, while others were noticeably lighter. The children could then compare their experiences and decide which category each object belonged to.


The two trays provided a simple visual representation of the concept. Objects that the children judged to be heavy were placed into the Heavy tray, while lighter objects were placed into the Light tray.


This transformed a basic mathematical concept into an enjoyable sorting game.
