National Day, celebrated on August 9, is a time to honor the founding of Singapore. At Genesis 1989 School, we took this opportunity to educate our students about this significant date. To start, the children gathered to read the picture book "National Day Celebration." Through this engaging story, they learned about Singapore's birthday and gained a preliminary understanding of its history.
During the lively discussion that followed, the children asked many questions: "How old is Singapore this year?" "Did Singapore eat cake on its birthday?" and "Happy birthday, Singapore!" Some shared memories of seeing planes pulling national flags and enjoying the beautiful fireworks on National Day. These conversations not only improved their language expression and thinking skills but also fostered a deeper connection to this special day.
In celebration of Singapore's 59th anniversary, we organized several activities. The children engaged in an art project where they made beautiful National Day crafts. Using graffiti, paper cutting, and pasting, they created works that highlighted the colors of the Singapore flag: red, white, five stars, and a crescent. This activity helped them consolidate their recognition of these symbols while enhancing their small motor skills and creative abilities.
Adding to the festivities, we had a food festival where the children enjoyed a variety of traditional Singaporean dishes. This event was not just about tasting delicious food; it was also an opportunity for the children to practice eating independently, fostering a sense of self-reliance.
Through these enriching activities, the children at Genesis 1989 School learned about the historical significance of National Day while celebrating Singapore's heritage. These experiences not only instilled a sense of national pride but also encouraged creativity, independence, and community spirit. Happy 59th birthday, Singapore!
