Here's What to Do if Your Child Sneaks Food or Steals

Updated: Jul 14, 2022

Caught your baby raiding the pantry or around him?

You might worry your baby is developing an unhealthy behaviour like sneaking or stealing.

In this article, I will be sharing how to cope when your baby sneaks or steals.

Suggestions

1. Be calm.

When you caught your baby raiding the pantry or around him, your baby might run or crawl away from you or startle and you might be shocked.

Find another time to talk to your baby about sneaking or stealing.

For example,

I love you and love to help you figure out a way for you to enjoy these foods without feeling like you have to hide them.

Let your baby share why he did it.

2. Consider your own attitudes.

Is your baby hungry, and not getting enough at mealtimes?

Do you prohibit your baby from eating specific foods or strictly monitor portions of them?

Do you label some foods as “bad” or “unhealthy”?

You are trying to feed your baby a well-balanced diet that contains enough protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals like vegetables and fruits.

It may backfire if your baby feels like he isn’t allowed to have what he wants.

Your baby might want those foods even more and eat more of them when given a chance.

3. Plan for an occasional treat from time to time.

Offer a serving of your baby’s favourite dessert along with or after dinner once or twice a week.

Offer your baby’s favourite treats like cookies or chips in scheduled snack times.

I hope all these suggestions will help you to cope when your baby sneaks or steals.

Your baby will learn and stop sneaking or stealing.

This prevents your baby grow up to be caught from sneaking or stealing.
