In this article, I will be sharing reasons and suggestions with you to help your child poop on the potty.
Why do children not want to poop in the potty?
Your child
- may not be as interested in sitting on the potty, waiting for poop to come out.
He rather is on the go, which pull ups and diapers make all the more convenient.
- might have constipation and is afraid to poop. Fear of the potty may have made him hold his poop which led to constipation. By the time he finally had to poop, he felt pain.
- is adjusting to a new way to poop while he had years of pooping in a diaper or pull ups.
Suggestions
1. Respond calmly without stress.
If your child
- doesn’t want to poop in the potty, say, “Okay.”
- has an accident in his underwear, clean the mess without saying a word.
This helps your child to give it a try.
2. Throw the diapers and pull ups.
This helps your child make the switch by ditching any temptations or fallback that could be keeping him stuck in his comfort zone.
Your child might still rely on the pull ups for sleep, especially at night, so you may not be able to ditch them completely.
Encourage your child to wear underwear.
Expect accidents to happen by having extra sheets ready or clearing the bed.
3. Make your child responsible for his choices.
If your child insists on wearing a pull up, then makes him responsible for using it.
For example,
Have your child fetches his own pull up, put it on, and let you know when he is done.
Show your child as you dump the poop in the toilet and get cleaned up.
It allows him to experience the inconvenience of pooping in a pull up.
Make your child responsible for fetching new underwear.

4. Praise your child for any progress he makes.
Your child
- sat on the potty and try to poop even if he didn’t poop in it.
- told you he needed to go where in the past he sneaked off without letting you know.
Praise motivates your child to keep trying.
5. Help your child face his fears.
Get children’s books about the potty and talk to your child about his fears.
Hug your child while he sits on the potty and tries to poop.
This gives your child confidence pooping in the potty again.
I hope all these suggestions will help your child to poop on the potty.
