In this article, I will be sharing some pointers for you to consider when to let your baby sleep in his own room.
If you are pregnant and plan to let your baby have his own room, you might have start setting up your baby’s nursery.
From choosing paint colours, selecting the crib and necessary items to put in your baby’s room, and decorating and getting his room ready is pretty special, but it is also a lot of time and work.
In the first few months, your baby most likely sleep with you and not in his own room.
Room sharing is recommended for at least six months.
It is convenient for parents to be able to quickly respond to their baby, offer feeds and diaper changing when needed throughout the night.
Your baby is naturally lighter or noisy sleepers. He needs love and attention from you frequently more than breastfeeding.
This definitely will disrupt your husband and your sleep. If you have older child, it might disrupt his sleep too.
Is your baby a noisy sleeper and/or waking up frequently throughout the night?
Your baby is more sensitive and easily startled by sound, voice or snore when sharing a room. He may sleep more soundly at night in his own room.
Your baby might grunt, toss and turn which may affect your husband and your sleep too.
Is your baby outgrowing his bassinet?
When your baby starts to outgrow the bassinet, he needs to sleep in a bigger crib.
If you don’t have room for a crib in your bedroom, move your baby to his own room.
Is your baby still nursing throughout the night?
Drop night feeds before moving your baby into his own room.
Going back and forth between rooms to offer feeds throughout the night would likely be more difficult for you.
Does your baby have a room to move to?
Moving your baby to another room may not be an option for you due to space limitations in your home.
Continue to share room with your baby. You can try to let your baby sleep in his bed beside your bed.
How to transition your baby to his own room?
Help your baby to become familiar with the new room during the day for naps and playtime.
Practise the bedtime routine in your baby’s room a few nights per week before making a permanent transition.
Discuss with your husband on when they feel comfortable moving your baby to his own room.
For example, after six months, your baby starts sleeping through the night in longer stretches.
I hope all these pointers will help you to decide when to let your baby sleep in his own room.
